A first principle (3+1) dimensional model for microtubule polymerization
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we propose a microscopic model to study the polymerization of microtubules (MTs). Starting from fundamental reactions during MT’s assembly and disassembly processes, we systematically derive a nonlinear system of equations that determines the dynamics of microtubules in 3D. We found that the dynamics of a MT is mathematically expressed via a cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. Interestingly, the generic 3D solution of the NLS equation exhibits linear growing and shortening in time as well as temporal fluctuations about a mean value which are qualitatively similar to the dynamic instability of MTs observed experimentally. By solving equations numerically, we have found spatio-temporal patterns consistent with experimental observations. PACS numbers: 87.15.-v, 05.40.+j

Mathematics and biophysics of cortical microtubules in plants
Microtubules confined to the two-dimensional cortex of elongating plant cells must form a parallel yet dispersed array transverse to the elongation axis for proper cell wall expansion. Collisions between microtubules, which migrate via hybrid treadmilling, can result in plus-end entrainment (“zippering”) or catastrophe. Here, I present (1) a cell-scale computational model of cortical microtubul...
متن کاملModelling the catalyst fragmentation pattern in relation to molecular properties and particle overheating in olefin polymerization
A two-dimensional single particle finite element model was used to examine the effects of particle fragmental pattern on the average molecular weights, polymerization rate and particle overheating in heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta olefin polymerization. A two-site catalyst kinetic mechanism was employed together with a dynamic two-dimensional molecular species in diffusion-reaction equation. The i...
متن کاملNanobiomechanical Properties of Microtubules
Microtubules, the active filaments with tubular shapes, play important roles in a wide range of cellular functions, including structural supports, mitosis, cytokinesis, and vesicular transport, which are essential for the growth and division of eukaryotic cells. Finding properties of microtubules is one of the main concerns of scientists. This work helps to obtain mechanical properties of m...
متن کاملThe Kinetics of Microtubule Assembly
A model describing the nucleation and assembly of purified tubulin has been developed. The novel feature of this model is a two stage nucleation process to allow the explicit inclusion of the two-dimensional nature of the early stages of microtubule assembly. In actin assembly the small starting nucleus has only one site for subunit addition as the two-stranded helix is formed. In contrast, mic...
متن کاملA mechanochemical model explains interactions between cortical microtubules in plants.
Microtubules anchored to the two-dimensional cortex of plant cells collide through plus-end polymerization. Collisions can result in rapid depolymerization, directional plus-end entrainment, or crossover. These interactions are believed to give rise to cellwide self-organization of plant cortical microtubules arrays, which is required for proper cell wall growth. Although the cell-wide self-org...
